Same-day response | Discreet, unmarked vehicles | Proofing, not just baiting | Domestic & commercial
A rat problem is not something to sit on. Rats breed rapidly, gnaw through cables and pipes (a genuine fire and flood risk), contaminate food, and carry diseases including Leptospirosis (Weil's disease). For a food business, a single rat sighting can mean a failed inspection and a closure order. Central Pest Control has dealt with rats in Dublin homes and businesses for over 35 years - quickly, discreetly, and in a way that actually keeps them out.
This page covers our rat control service in full: the signs of rats, how our treatment and proofing works, our discreet approach, our commercial/food-business expertise, and what it costs.
Signs You Have Rats
Rats are secretive and largely nocturnal, so you often notice the signs before you see the rat itself. Look for:
| Sign | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Droppings | Dark, spindle-shaped droppings up to 12mm long, often clustered along walls or near food. A clear sign of active rats. |
| Gnaw marks | Rats gnaw constantly. Damage to skirting, cables, pipes, food packaging and even soft masonry. |
| Scratching noises | Scurrying and scratching in walls, under floors or in the attic, especially at night. |
| Runs and smears | Greasy 'smear marks' along walls and skirting where rats repeatedly travel, and worn runs through grass or borders. |
| Burrows | Holes 60-90mm across in banks, under sheds, near drains and in overgrown areas of the garden. |
| Nests | Shredded material (paper, insulation, fabric) in lofts, wall cavities or under floors. |
| A distinctive smell | An established rat infestation has a strong, ammonia-like odour. |
If you have noticed any of these, act quickly - a rat problem only grows. Read more in our blog on how to get rid of rats in your home or garden.
Our Rat Control Approach: Treat AND Proof
The mistake cheap operators make is to lay bait and leave. Bait reduces the current rat population, but if the entry points remain open, new rats simply move in. Effective rat control has two halves - and we do both:
1. Treatment
We inspect, identify the species, confirm the extent of the infestation and treat the active rat problem safely.
- Inspection to confirm the species, the extent of the infestation and the harbourage points
- Targeted baiting and trapping using professional rodenticides in tamper-resistant bait stations, applied safely around children, pets and non-target wildlife
- A drainage inspection, because defective drains are one of the most common routes for rats into Dublin homes
- Follow-up visits to monitor bait take, remove any carcasses and confirm the infestation is cleared
2. Proofing
We identify how rats got in and close the routes so new rats cannot simply move into the same space.
- Identifying and sealing every entry point, as rats can squeeze through a gap of around 20mm
- Fitting bristle strips, wire mesh, rodent-proof sealant and, where needed, drain blockers or non-return valves
- Advising on the conditions attracting rats, including food waste, open bins, clutter and dense vegetation, so the problem does not recur
Discreet by Design
Nobody wants the neighbours to know they have rats. Central Pest Control attends in discreet, unmarked vehicles, and our technicians are professional and low-key. Whether we are treating a family home, a restaurant or a retail unit, your privacy is respected there is no branding on the van and no fuss on the doorstep.
Commercial & Food-Business Rat Control
For Dublin's cafés, restaurants, takeaways, food producers and retailers, rat control is not optional - it is a legal food-safety requirement under the FSAI and your HACCP system. A rat problem in a food business is a compliance emergency: it risks a failed environmental health inspection, a closure order, and serious reputational damage.
Central Pest Control's commercial rat control service is built for exactly this. We provide scheduled monitoring, tamper-resistant bait stations mapped to a site plan, full written documentation and pest-activity logs for your HACCP records, and rapid response to any sighting. This is our core strength, and it is content and a service that a low-cost, one-off operator simply cannot offer. Learn more in our guide on rats and food safety for Dublin businesses.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
How quickly can you deal with rats in Dublin?
We aim for a same-day or next-day response for rat problems, and we prioritise rats indoors and in food businesses. Rats breed and spread quickly, so the sooner we inspect and treat, the easier the problem is to resolve. -
Do you just lay bait, or do you stop them coming back?
We do both - and the second part is what matters most. As well as baiting and trapping to clear the current rats, we find and seal the entry points and inspect drainage, so new rats cannot simply move in. Proofing is what makes the fix permanent, and it is included in our approach as standard. -
Are your treatments safe around children and pets?
Yes. We use tamper-resistant bait stations and apply rodenticides following strict safety protocols, keeping products away from children, pets and non-target wildlife. Our technicians are PMU-licensed and trained specifically in safe rodenticide use. -
Do you provide documentation for food businesses?
Yes. Our commercial rat control includes full written reports and pest-activity logs for your HACCP records, plus a site plan of bait station locations - exactly what an FSAI or environmental health inspection expects to see.
