The Scratching Behind the Wall: Why Autumn Is When Rodent Problems Can Get Serious
There is a sound nobody wants to hear in their home or workplace.
Scratching behind the wall.
A faint movement in the ceiling.
Something running across the floor when you switch on the light.
Or that unmistakable noise coming from somewhere you cannot quite reach.
You tell yourself it is probably nothing.
Maybe it is the pipes.
Maybe it is the house settling.
Maybe you imagined it.
But as autumn arrives, there is one possibility that should not be ignored:
Rodents.
Autumn is a warning sign for rodent activity
As temperatures fall, rats and mice have a very good reason to start looking for somewhere warmer, safer and closer to food.
That can mean sheds, garages, attics, wall cavities, kitchens, commercial premises, storage areas and service spaces.
Irish Department of Agriculture guidance specifically highlights autumn and winter as periods when buildings can become more vulnerable to rat activity, particularly where there are weaknesses in the building or surrounding areas.
And rodents do not need a large opening to get inside.
A mouse can squeeze through a gap of approximately 6mm.
A rat can get through a gap of approximately 13mm.
That means the tiny gap you have never thought twice about could potentially be an entry point.
The frightening part? You may never see them.
Rodents are remarkably good at staying out of sight.
You may have an infestation developing without ever seeing a rat or mouse during the day.
Instead, look for the clues.
You might notice:
- Scratching or scurrying noises, particularly at night
- Droppings around cupboards, storage areas or food preparation spaces
- Gnaw marks on packaging, wood, insulation or other materials
- Greasy marks along walls or frequently used routes
- Damaged food packaging
- Unusual smells around enclosed areas
- Nesting materials hidden away in quiet spaces
- Signs of activity around bins, drains, roof spaces or external storage areas
One sign on its own may not tell you the full story.
Several signs together should not be ignored.
And by the time you see the evidence, the problem may already be established
This is where rodent problems can become particularly difficult.
Rats and mice are not simply looking for somewhere to sleep.
They are looking for food, water, shelter and safe routes through a building.
Once they find those conditions, they can continue using the same areas and establish harbourage in places that are difficult to access.
A quiet ceiling void.
Behind kitchen units.
Inside wall cavities.
Under floors.
Around service penetrations.
Behind stored goods.
Inside plant or utility areas.
You may be completely unaware of what is happening behind the surfaces around you.
The damage isn’t just about food
Rodents are notorious for gnawing.
They can damage packaging, insulation, building materials and other items, while rodent activity around electrical wiring can create additional concerns.
The Health and Safety Authority specifically advises maintaining proper pest control to help avoid rodent damage to electrical wiring and equipment.
For a business, the consequences can extend beyond physical damage.
Rodent activity can create problems around:
- Food storage
- Kitchens and food preparation
- Warehouses
- Offices
- Retail premises
- Hospitality businesses
- Property management
- Waste storage
- Plant and service areas
For commercial premises, an unexplained rodent problem can quickly become an operational issue rather than simply an inconvenience.
“But my building is clean…”
Rodents do not only appear in dirty buildings.
Good hygiene is important, but it does not automatically make a building rodent-proof.
A property can be clean and still have:
- Gaps around pipes and cables
- Damaged doors or thresholds
- Openings around drains
- Cracks or structural gaps
- Accessible waste areas
- External harbourage
- Food sources
- Untidy storage areas
This is why effective rodent control involves looking beyond the rodent itself.
Where are they getting in?
Where are they travelling?
Where are they feeding?
Where are they hiding?
And most importantly:
How do you stop the problem from returning?
Don’t wait until you see a rat
One of the biggest mistakes people make is waiting for obvious evidence.
You do not necessarily need to see a rat running across your kitchen floor before taking action.
If you are hearing scratching at night, finding unexplained droppings, noticing gnawing or repeatedly seeing signs of activity, it is worth investigating.
The earlier a rodent problem is identified, the easier it can be to understand what is happening and address the conditions allowing it to continue.
What should you do if you suspect rodents?
Start by looking for obvious signs of activity and potential access points.
Check around:
- External doors
- Pipe and cable entry points
- Drains and gullies
- Roof and wall penetrations
- Bin and waste areas
- Garages and sheds
- Food storage areas
- Quiet storage spaces
Do not simply assume that putting down bait will solve the problem.
Irish best-practice guidance recommends an integrated approach to rodent control, including exclusion, hygiene, maintenance and other control measures. Rodenticides should be used carefully and in accordance with the relevant requirements.
The aim should not simply be to remove rodents that are already present.
It should be to understand why they are there in the first place.
This autumn, listen carefully.
That noise behind the wall might be nothing.
But if it isn’t, ignoring it will not make it disappear.
As the evenings get darker and temperatures begin to drop, rats and mice will be looking for exactly what buildings can provide:
warmth, shelter, food and somewhere safe to hide.
So if you hear that scratching…
