Why am I suddenly seeing Black Ants?

Although it is early in the year for ants, as they usually come out on the move when temperatures increase between March and September, Central Pest Control have already been receiving call outs for ant problems in people’s homes. Ants are in search for a food and water supply, so your aim is to not give them that, if you want to avoid an ant infestation.

A common question we receive is why am I suddenly seeing ants at my home and where did they come from?

Well as we know, warmer temperatures do tend to draw out ants but there are other factors too that will attract ants to your home and garden. Knowing these factors could prevent you from an ant infestation occurring in your home, as once one ant has found a food source in your home, they will bring that back to their nest and will send a signal to the rest of their colony where the food source is and their colony will follow suit, leading you with a problem.

Why you could suddenly be seeing Black Ants?

  1. Moisture and Water Source: Ants are attracted to water and humidity areas.A well-watered garden may attract ants, providing them with a water source, but also leaking pipes, dripping faucets will also attract these crawling insects.
  2. Food Source: Ants are attracted to sugary foods such as fruit, syrups and sugary drink spills. They have an excellent sense of smell and will be able to smell out a sugar trail to follow very easy.

Pro Tip: Good housekeeping is an essential part of keeping an ant infestation at bay. Wiping up spills immediately, storing food in sealed containers and sweeping up crumbs from kitchen floors and counters are all steps to take to avoid attracting ants.

  1. Nesting Opportunities: Ants are on the lookout for is a place to nest. Black ants will build nests under stones, paving slabs and in soil. Keeping your garden tidy will contribute to your prevention of infestation.
  2. Changes in Environment: A reason you may suddenly be seeing ants in your garden could be your activity. You may have moved for example, paving slabs and this could have disturbed the ants causing them to be on the move.
  3. Entry Points: Ants can find their way into your home through tiny cracks, gaps, or openings. They can enter through doors, windows, utility lines, and any other small openings they can squeeze through, which by their tiny size, is a lot of opportunities for them.
  4. Previous Infestation:If your house has previously experienced ant infestations, the scent trails, and pheromones left behind by the ants may attract new ants to the same areas.

However, although these are preventive measures, if you do have an ant infestation already active in your home, they will not go away on their own, without professional intervention.

While you may see a decrease in their activity with these measures, ants are resourceful, resistant insects. Once they have found a suitable location in your home, they will continue to return to it, if you have not had the infestation eradicated by a professional pest control company, such as Central Pest Control. Although Black Garden Ants are not known for major health problems to man, they do carry diseases such as Salmonella, which when an ant comes into contact with foodstuff in your home or business they will then be contaminated. The longer you leave an ant infestation untreated the larger it’ll become and the harder it will be to prevent their return.
